To be the best...
Arsenal head to Manchester for a meeting with the reigning champions that arrives at a rather awkward moment. The Gunners have managed just five points from their opening four WSL matches, with a 1-0 win at Brighton followed by scoreless draws with Crystal Palace and Manchester United before last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea. The goals– just two in the league so far– have been particularly hard to come by. Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw at Paris FC will hardly have helped the mood after Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead. Alessia Russo and Georgia Stanway did at least get off the mark in Paris, offering a little attacking encouragement before a trip to face the league’s early pacesetters. Renee Slegers must find a way to get her side firing before Arsenal’s early-season frustrations become a habit.
City, meanwhile, have wasted no time settling into life as champions, winning all four of their WSL matches and sitting top with 12 points and a +8 goal difference. Andrée Jeglertz’s side have beaten Birmingham, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Charlton, with Bunny Shaw already on four league goals and Mary Fowler, Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood among the other threats Arsenal will need to contain. City also played out a 1-1 Champions League draw with Real Madrid on Thursday, with Shaw scoring the equaliser. Arsenal did win the last meeting 1-0 at the Emirates in February, but the Gunners will need considerably more than nostalgia when these two meet at the Etihad on Sunday. There’s also the small matter of two familiar faces now wearing Sky Blue: Beth Mead left Arsenal after nine years this summer, joining the injured Vivianne Miedema and adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already spicy fixture.
The men may still yet to emerge from their extended international-break hibernation, but thankfully there’s another big Arsenal match to fill the void. So grab a pint, settle in and let the women provide the weekend’s proper dose of Arsenal drama.
