The job isn’t finished yet…
Real Madrid host Arsenal for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final. After a result that shocked the world, the Gunners head to the Bernabeu with a three-goal lead. Mikel Arteta and his squad will know the job is far from over.
Madrid were humiliated last week. That’s not a result that will sit well with their fans. We’ve seen reports this week that Madrid ultras will be up to serious shenanigans in the lead up to the match. Madrid will have a slightly different squad from Tuesday, with Tchouameni coming in for the suspended Camavinga. Ancelotti also has decisions to make at left back after Saka had his way with David Alaba in the first leg. Is frustration boiling over for Madrid? Kylian Mbappe saw red in their match after a horror challenge against Alaves. This is not a deficit they are familiar with, and with La Liga being out of reach, they will be desperate to overturn.
Arsenal will likely have the same team from the first leg. And why would you change it? While we’ll never forget the result from London, advancing is the priority. Arteta will need his men calm and focused. If it’s one thing Madrid can do, it’s score in bunches. Key men Saka, Rice, and Saliba will need to be at their best to hold on in what will be a fiery atmosphere.
Can Arsenal keep their nerve in Spain and see off the defending champions? Or have they simply pissed off a sleeping dragon?
