As easy as it is to be looking ahead to the weekend already, first there is the small matter of a Champions League tie for Arsenal to contend with. More than 20 years later, The Gunners head to the north of France to renew acquaintances with RC Lens. These sides last clashed in UEFA Cup play back in 2000, with Arsène Wenger's men winning both matches on their way to the infamous final in Copenhagen. This was a stark contrast to their only other meetings, in the UCL group stage in 1998, which resulted in a draw and a win for Lens in a dreary affair at old Wembley.
The unheralded hosts were the surprise of Ligue 1 last season, finishing runners-up to PSG by a single point in only their third campaign since returning to France's top flight. Although Les Sang et Or lost 4 and drew 1 of their first 5 league matches, a 1-1 draw at Sevilla has been followed by 2 consecutive victories. Franck Haise's side sit 15th, but they are a mere 3 points off 8th. Arsenal delivered what was quite possibly their best performance of the season to date against PSV, and will aim for a repeat performance. Given the injury situation and considering the magnitude of what lies next, Mikel Arteta must balance the need to rotate the side where able with the luxury of wrapping up the group as early as possible.
