Three points is usually enough motivation. In this case, a result doesn’t just with points but two fewer games. Arsenal needs just one point from Wednesday’s trip to Girona – Catalonia’s other other team – to advance directly to the round of 16 instead of having to deal with a two-legged playoff. Arsenal’s goal differential should be enough to see them through regardless, but winning is always better than the Arsenal, especially heading into next Sunday’s titanic clash at the Emirates. More on that later in the week.
Michael Oliver has not officiated any of Arsenal’s Champions League matches, so Myles Lewis-Skelly will be available for selection. Time will tell for Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino after they missed Saturday’s win in Wolverhampton through illness. Girona’s time in the Champions League ends on Wednesday. The Blanquivermells are 31st in the 36-team table, having won just one of their first seven. La Liga has been a bit kinder – they’re eighth – but Girona’s form has hardly been consistent enough to make anything other than three points acceptable. Also Daley Blind plays for them!
