On Thursday, Arsenal host Liverpool in a crunch tie in North London. After opening up a six-point gap to second plane, The Gunners will be looking for a statement win as they go into an FA Cup weekend. Without a win over his managerial counterpart to date, Mikel Arteta finally enters a match against Arne Slot without Arsenal in a serious injury crisis.
Liverpool haven’t had the season they were expecting. After “winning” the summer transfer window, most talking heads tipped them to walk the league. The reality has been harsh. Despite being unbeaten in their last five, they find themselves 14 points adrift from league leaders Arsenal. Alexander Isak will be missing, and it’s likely Hugo Ekitike will also miss the match through injury. With Mo Salah away at AFCON, Liverpool will need someone to step up. Cody Gakpo could be that guy, while Florian Wirtz has been finding his feet in recent weeks.
Arsenal, fresh off a 3-2 away at Bournemouth, will still have the sting of their Anfield trip earlier this campaign on their mind. A Dominik Szoboszlai wonder free kick separated the sides and gave Arsenal their first defeat of the season. Since then, Liverpool have fallen, while Arsenal have risen. Even missing a few players, Liverpool will be a tough side to deal with. The Gunners will need to be clinical with their chances, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Leandro Trossard hoping to make an impact.
Can Arsenal take another three points and heap misery on Liverpool’s top four challenge? Or will Arne Slot get another one over on Mikel? It’s an afternoon kick-off on Thursday. Knock off work early, and head down to Dillon’s. Let’s do our part!
