Arsenal host Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea on Sunday in our first London Derby of the season. Both teams have six points through the opening fixtures and will view it as an early test for their squads.
Chelsea come to the Emirates with a new manager, having won the race to sign Morgan Rogers ahead of Arsenal at the beginning of summer, and determined to beat The Gunners for the first time since 2021. Cornerstones of previous campaigns, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez have both departed. Despite a free flowing attach, Chelsea have looked ropey at the back so far having conceded five goals in their opening two games.
The Gunners have a good recent history against their London rivals, but Mikel Arteta will not be taking this match lightly. Without the addition of a level raising forward this summer, he’ll once again be challenged to find more goals with what he’s got. Bukayo Saka started the season in blistering form, and with Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa fit and available, both could start the match. Questions will linger around summer recruitment, especially after the departure of Gabriel Martinelli without a replacement. Players like Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke will now have the opportunity to make an impact from that side.
Will Arsenal’s elite defensive unit stem the tide of Chelsea’s adventurous attack? Or will the visitors get their statement win at The Emirates and announce themselves as contenders?
