After a challenging week marked by domestic cup futility, Arsenal reignited their Premier League campaign with a crucial 2-1 victory in the North London Derby, where they came from behind to secure the win. Hopefully the Gunners have turned the page on a torrid week and can use the win as a momentum-builder. The result extended their unbeaten run to 11 league matches (W7 D5). Mikel Arteta's side sit second in the Premier League table with 43 points, four points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. However, Arsenal's grueling, nearly-every-three-days January schedule continues, a situation exacerbated by mounting injuries. With Gabriel Jesus joining an absentee list that already included Saka, Nwaneri, and Ben White, among others, Arsenal's squad rotation and tactical planning has become even more challenging.
Aston Villa are enjoying another commendable season under Unai Emery. In their last 5 league matches, the West Midlands side have W3 D1 L1, including an impressive victory over Manchester City. This run has propelled them to seventh place, just two points shy of fifth. Since Emery took charge at Villa, both he and Mikel Arteta have secured two wins against each other, including Arsenal's triumph in the reverse fixture in August. Of course, a win in either fixture last season could have clinched the title for Arsenal. The visitors will be without their club captain, John McGinn whose absence removes a tenacious presence from Villa's midfield, potentially impacting their approach to the game. Defender Pau Torres also misses out due to injury. Don't buy the social media chatter or the talking heads, this is still a very good side performing at a high level. Take advantage of another late Saturday kick-off and cheer on the Red and White to another big three points!
