Whichever cliché you prefer to describe Arsenal's third and final meeting in six weeks with Liverpool, one thing is certain: the result has every chance of defining both clubs' seasons. The Gunners should be riding high on an upswing in form following a challenging spell that included an early exit from the FA Cup at the hands of these same Merseysiders. Gooners have reason to be optimistic: Mikel Arteta's side has showcased resilience in recent days and also rediscovered some attacking prowess right when it is needed most. The hosts sit third in the table behind the league-leading visitors, level on points with City, having played a game more.

His announcement injects an extra layer of intensity into an already high-stakes encounter.
