After a difficult loss to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, Arsenal host Manchester United in the FA Cup third round. With a mountain to climb in one domestic cup, a loss here and subsequent elimination from another competition would leave the Gunners reeling. What can Mikel cook up? There’s no sense tracking through the Arsenal injury list– we all know. The line-up will be similar with maybe a few rotations sprinkled in. It’s on the players to put the ball in the back of the net. Advancing will depend on the finishing of the forward line, and Arteta will be desperate for Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard to be more clinical. xG doesn’t win trophies, etc. etc.
For United, the FA Cup represents a chance to win something in an otherwise bleak season. Ruben Amorim will be encouraged by their last outing, a 2-2 draw at Liverpool they could have won, and the form of their captain, Bruno Fernandes. In the PL fixture earlier a few weeks ago, Arsenal won 2-0 but scored both goals from set pieces. After Tuesday night, Amorim will take encouragement knowing he is facing a depleted side showing fatigue and lack of spark in front of goal.
This is a clash of FA Cup heavyweights. Arsenal and Manchester United have been the two most successful clubs in this competition’s history. Will Arsenal take their chances? Or will Tuesday’s defeat become a turning point in the season? All we can do as fans is remain firmly behind the club and manager.
